Risk Assessments

Bee Swarm – What to Do

We have an apiary with 2 hives at the allotments. From May to the end of July, honey bees swarm to increase the number of colonies. During swarming, bees are usually quite docile. However, they may settle and cause an inconvenience. There is help available in Steeple Aston to remove swarms.

Please view our Bee Swarm Notice here, including contact numbers.

Strimmer Risk Assessment

SACAA can make it’s powerful petrol strimmer and safety equipment available to plot holders. All equipment must be used at the allotments only, and training on correct, safe use of the equipment is required upfront. If you are interested in receiving training, please contact Stuart Walton.

Download the risk assessment (pdf format) for use of the strimmer.

Bee Veils: Protection Available to Allotment Holders

Two months into our Pilot Bee project, there has no reports of nuisance caused by our bee colony. However, during weekly hive inspections and when we take off honey, it is likely there there will more bee activity. Also, we are beginning to see more wasps around.

If you are worried about being stung – whether by bees or wasps – then why not use a bee veil while you are working your allotment?

Find two veils in the little shed immediately right of the car park.

Please put the veils back after use for the next person.
